First we’ll look at the differences between cotton and polyester for your clothes and how to choose according to your needs. Then we’ll look at ideas for garments you can personalise.
When we buy branded clothing for our campaigns, it is important to select the type of textile according to the audience, the brand image and the promotional action. However, once this choice has been made, a great deal of attention needs to be paid to the composition of the promotional clothing chosen. The two most common materials are cotton and polyester (and even a mixture of the two).
Are there characteristics that determine whether one is better than the other? Which is best suited to my advertising campaign? We will then explain the differences between the two materials and give some examples of the type of garment best suited to the occasion.
Characteristics of cotton textiles
Cotton is a natural textile fibre from a plant that is produced in many countries around the world. It is distinguished by its fine, short, white threads, which can be easily dyed.
Branded clothing made from this material is generally softer, feels pleasant to the touch and is generally breathable (its composition needs to be seen exactly to determine this). It is more expensive than other materials, so there is a feeling that it is of better quality. However, this is because the process of growing, collecting and processing is more expensive.
As a result, customisable cotton clothes will be more comfortable, fresher and the perception of quality will be higher.
What’s more, you can also choose clothes made from organic cotton. In other words, from crops that are free from toxic substances (such as pesticides and chemical fertilisers), making water management more efficient.
Characteristics of polyester for clothing
Polyester, a plastic resin derived from petroleum, may initially seem harmful to the environment. However, many T-shirts, polo shirts, and other garments are now made from recycled polyester, offering a more sustainable option with a lower environmental impact during production.
One key advantage of polyester is its affordability, helping to reduce the cost of promotional textiles. It’s also lightweight, highly elastic, and moisture-resistant, drying faster than other materials—ideal for active-wear and sports enthusiasts.
Additionally, polyester’s composition is perfect for sublimation printing, allowing vibrant, long-lasting custom designs that bring your brand to life.
Differences between cotton and polyester
Although we’ve already detailed the main features of each, it’s time for a more direct comparison.
For a start, cotton tends to be more expensive than polyester, so it will be perceived as a better quality product. On that note, it all depends on the type of garment, not just the material.
The former breathes better, but the latter is more resistant to moisture and dries more quickly. Additionally, cotton creases and deforms more easily, making it less ideal for active wear compared to more durable fabrics.
Cotton is also a bit more delicate, with specific washing, drying, and ironing requirements, making it more prone to damage or shrinkage. Polyester, on the other hand, is more resistant to these processes.
And what happens with pieces that mix the two materials? This approach will preserve some advantages and minimise the disadvantages.. In short, they will be cool, lightweight garments with a certain resistance to moisture, they will shrink less than cotton garments and they will be more durable and resistant.
